The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Thursday said it is investigating death of a Pretoria man, Doctor Setlai, who allegedly died as a result of police action on Tuesday in Baviian Road, Leeufontein.
It is alleged that Tshwane Municipal Police Directorate(TMPD) cable theft unit was having an operation with other stakeholders, disconnecting illegally connected electricity cables.
“During that operation all the illegally connected cables were disconnected and the operation ended. The [police] team left around midday,” said IPID national spokesperson Ndileka Cola.
“Few hours later, TMPD operational commander for illegal cable connections received a call informing him that the community members are back at Baviian Road and they are reconnecting the earlier disconnected electricity cables.”
She said the operational commander requested back up from the TMPD crowd management unit, which provided six members with a Nyala. Other TMPD officers also joined.
” It is further alleged that when the metro police officers arrived at Leeufontein, indeed they found a group of people reconnecting the electricity cables that were disconnected few hours ago,” said Cola.
“When TMPD officers stopped the community members, it is alleged that they started to throw stones at the law enforcement officers and state vehicles. The TMPD crowd management unit members then alighted from the Nyala retaliated by shooting against the community members who were throwing stones at the law enforcement officers and the state vehicles.”
It is alleged that Setlai was shot during the confrontation. He was later declared deceased by the Gauteng Emergency Services.
IPID said the post mortem was conducted on Wednesday but the investigation is still ongoing.
