JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) on Monday said it was saddened by the passing away of Lenin Magigwane Shope, South Africa’s Ambassador to Senegal.

“He passed on in Senegal earlier this week. His death is a great loss to the people of South Africa,” said ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe.
“He grew up in exile and studied in Cuba in the 1970s. Cuba influenced his revolutionary outlook including imparting the revolutionary values of selfless service and human solidarity.”
Mabe said Ambassador Shope had a very colourful diplomatic career during in which he represented South Africa in Cuba and also served as head of mission in Botswana, Italy and Australia.
He added that the ANC conveys its “sincere condolences” to Ambassador Shope’s family, especially his mother, Mama Gertude Shope, the mass democratic movement and all freedom-loving people of the world.

“We hope they will find comfort in the knowledge that the whole country shares in their sorrow.”
