JOHANNESBURG – The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has called for a strike at the SABC this Friday on behalf of workers.
This follows the issuing of Section 189 retrenchment letters at the public broadcaster.
About 400 workers stand to lose their jobs, with only 170 positions open for application.
CWU is demanding the termination of the notices served to affected workers.
The Union also called on SABC employees to be united ahead of its proposed blackout of all SABC platforms
Group executive for news and current affairs Phathiswa Magopeni agreed to stop issuing Section 189 retrenchment letters after being confronted by angry staff.
However, on Wednesday morning the broadcaster indicated it will go ahead with retrenchments as planned, despite Magopeni’s statement on Tuesday.
The union says SABC restructuring process must look at using online platforms to generate income as that’s where many advertisers have moved.
