JOHANNESBURG – A 45-year-old man was arrested for impersonating police and extortion on Thursday in Johannesburg central.

Captain Xoli Mbele said, “Four suspects allegedly robbed a 41-year-old man who was coming from Pretoria to JHB CBD for shopping. The victim was confronted by the bogus cops and one of them produced a fake appointment card (police name badge).”

It is alleged the four asked for his passport and he failed to produce it. The accused demanded R500. As the victim was trying to count the R500, the suspects grabbed all the money and ran away.

One of the suspects was arrested and the other three are still at large.

Johannesburg Central Station Commander Brigadier Perumal commended work done by the patrollers and community in apprehending the suspect. Perumal said real police don’t demand money but they arrest people without valid papers to be in a country.
