EERSTERUST – The old woman who made headlines after being chained to a hospital bench while awaiting service at the Mamelodi Hospital, ouma Martha Marais, has died.

“She died peacefully yesterday, 16 October 2020, at the Eersterust Association and Community Health centre (EACH) in Eersterust, Pretoria, a few hour after visiting with her children and celebrating her son Vernon’s birthday,” said family spokesperson Virginia Keppler.

” The family of ouma Marais would like to thank everyone, especially the staff at EACH for their unselfish care and love, and all those who prayed for ouma Marais.”

Keppler said funeral arrangements would be announced soon.

“May ouma Marais’ soul rest in perfect peace,” she said.

Earlier this year, the Gauteng department of health apologized for the treatment Marais got from the hospital.

Former Gauteng health MEC Bandile Masuku announced that an undisclosed settlement had been reached with the family of the pensioner.

The parties had agreed to not disclose details of the settlement.
